A bridal makeup trial has become an essential part of wedding preparations. Some artists prefer to call it a “preview” now, as they don’t want to feel like they’re the ones "on trial."
I don’t agree with that, but I do prefer to call it what it is – a consultation appointment.
Do you really “need” it? I would say – it depends. Not all of my clients have a trial, so I’ll start with reasons why you might skip it and then share the other side.
Why Yes?
A bridal trial helps you avoid surprises on the big day. It also helps build trust with your makeup artist and makes you feel less nervous. Plus, it’s a fun opportunity to try different eyeshadows, lipsticks, and experiment a little.
Why Not?
If you're confident in the artist’s work and trust their expertise, skipping the trial is possible. However, when you come for a trial, you’re not in your dress, and it’s not really your wedding day. For some people, it’s hard to imagine how the final look will come together. Some brides already know exactly what they want, so they don’t feel the need to spend the time and money for the same look twice.
What If You Skip the Trial?
Even if you choose not to have a trial, we’ll still talk beforehand. We’ll have a video or Zoom call, and I’ll ask for pictures. I will be prepared for you, and your makeup will still be personalized to suit you!
How to Prepare for a Trial
The most important thing is to be open and share your thoughts. One sentence I don’t think belongs in a trial is: “You’re the makeup artist, you know better than I do.”
The truth is – I’ve just met you, and you know yourself better than I do. Sure, I can do what I think would suit you, but I might choose colours you're not in love with or create a look that doesn’t feel 100% "you." If you really don’t have any preference, perhaps that's a sign you don't need a trial.
How to Prep Your Skin
Before the trial, it’s helpful to exfoliate and make sure your skin is well-hydrated. If you can come with no makeup on, that would be ideal.
What to Wear
Wearing a white top or a bright color will give you a good sense of how your makeup will look on the wedding day. Please avoid turtlenecks and high-necked tops.
After the Trial
It’s nice to take pictures so you can remember the look and refer back to it. At the end of the day, you can remove the makeup with a regular cleanser. For eyelashes, you’ll need an oil-based makeup remover – my personal favourite is Lancôme Bi-Facil.
Hope you find this guide helpful! Can’t wait to see you at your bridal makeup trial!
